For the first time since I can remember (somewhere back in my teenage years) I am actually paying attention to the TV schedule and know which shows are on which nights. It's sad, I know. (At least I usually exercise while watching, so it's not a complete waste.) Well, on Friday and Saturday nights and here and there on other nights there is usually nothing that interests me, so I've started checking out videos and DVDs from the library. One of my brothers gave me his DVD player on my birthday (alas, not the remote control, though--not that I'm lazy but it's much easier to understand than the actual machine, oddly enough), so I've been using it a lot. One night Mary and I were watching something and I had to get up for some reason, so I put what we were watching on pause. I think I was in the kitchen when Mary called to me, "I wish you'd come in here and see this." I went in wondering what in the world it could be. "What is it?" I asked. "Look at this. It hasn't moved for five minutes, " she said with a mixtur of concern, consternation and I'm certain a sort of pride that she had caught something special happening. I simply rolled laughing. She'd never heard of being able to pause a video or DVD. She's so cute!
I am 41 and have a baby without ever having given birth! And it doesn't have four legs, either! I have somehow managed to adopt my 98-year-old Aunt Mary. She thinks she has adopted me, which is ok since she never had any children. I also have a 97-year-old Aunt Anna. My mom, the youngest sister (80), is quite a hoot. Unfortunately, two other siblings died this past year.

- I originally studied voice (coloratura lyric--ie, high notes but no agility, love to wallow in legato) but after moving to Germany (ostentatiously to pursue this goal further, although I see now that I really just wanted to learn to speak a foreign language fluently and to live in Europe and eat well), I gave up singing classical music. I sang with a pop/soul group for a few years--it was a lot of fun, but we practiced far more than we ever performed, which was in the end quite deadly and seems to be the story of my performing life. I moved back to the U.S. and taught German for a couple of years--that's when I moved in with Mary. Then I decided to actually study German and get a degree in it (since I had a great deal where, not only would the education be practically free, but I'd also get to work and have an income). I finished my degree and have moved back in full-time with Mary--over the last two years I'd come home every other weekend to take care of her and called her about three times a day to check on her. I guess you could say I'm a bit over-protective :-)
